George Fytas

Education

George Fytas has received the B.Sc. in Chemistry of the University of Athens. He obtained his doctoral degree in Physical Chemistry from the Technical University of Hannover in 1975 with work on Brillouin spectroscopy of liquids.

Career

Headshot of George Fytas From 1978 to 1980 he was a post-doctoral associate at the Department of Chemistry SUNY at Stony Brook with Prof. B. Chu, working on photon correlation of bulk polymers. He returned to the Department of Chemistry of the University of Bielefeld in the group of Prof. Dr. Th. Dorfmüller, where he finished his habilitation in 1983, based on the application of laser light scattering techniques to study molecular motion in polymers.

In 1983 he was visiting associate professor in Salt Lake City, USA; in 1984, he was visiting scientist in MPI-P in the group of Prof. Dr. E.W. Fischer and was appointed Professor at the University of Crete in 1985. He is affiliated researcher and Head of the Polymer Group at FORTH–Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser (IESL) since 1988.

In 1999, he was awarded the FORTH prize for basic research, in 2002 he received a Humboldt Research award, and in 2004 became a Fellow of the American Physical Society. Prof. Dr. Fytas serves as an external scientific member of the MPI-P since 1998.

Retired from the University of Crete in 2016.
