Abstract

Structured light, as the generation of custom light fields it is often described, involves the modulation of a single, or multiple parameters/dimensions of an optical wave; like for example its phase, amplitude, temporal profile, and polarization. Structured light fields provide a significant advantage compared to non-structured light when used as means of energy delivery on a target, especially when propagating through dynamically varying inhomogeneous media. Manipulating and controlling the spatial features of the optical focus in such a scheme is an open problem of crucial importance for numerous applications, like optical telecommunications, bio-photonics, direct laser writing and non-linear optics. In this thesis we will study, both theoretically and experimentally, the propagation of multi- dimensionally structured light through dynamic inhomogeneous media. Our study will focus mainly on optimizing the light field for application schemes that refer to optical telecommunication links through turbulent media and imaging through weakly scattering biological media.
