- Abstract
-
In order to restore normal structure and function in severely injured organs, the field of regenerative medicine (RM) seeks to develop treatments that can alter wound healing in situ using appropriate biomaterials, cells and compounds. This talk discusses the development of RM grafts for the nervous system research based on porous collagen-based scaffolds (PCS), one of the few FDA-approved biomaterials with established clinical applications. The first part of the talk will present data from peripheral nerve wound healing, suggesting a key role of tissue biomechanics in biomaterial-induced regeneration. The second part will present recent and ongoing efforts to develop personalized treatments for Central Nervous System (CNS) injuries that combine PCS grafts, potent stem cells and neuroprotective small-molecules.
