Abstract

Can discoveries be really planned or they just pop up? This seminar will present several examples from scientific history that show that the careful planning and project design to tackle serious scientific and social issues is only one of the efficient research strategies. Another one comes from curiosity-driven research, which, though not always having concrete objectives, can lead to interesting results several times. The applicant, after presenting some main points of his scientific trajectory, discusses how the above-mentioned strategy can be efficient also for the case of nanomaterials for ambitious future research projects with or without readily envisaged applications.
