The development of functional biomaterial scaffolds for bone tissue engineering includes the control of specific chemical, mechanical, and biological parameters involved in the growth of bone tissue, in a way that mimics the physiological process of bone defect healing.
This talk focuses on the development of biomaterials and scaffolds made from biodegradable natural and synthetic biomaterials, functionalized with osteoinductive growth factors, and on the evaluation of their osteogenic response in static and dynamic cell cultures.
We will discuss recent advances in the development of novel biomaterials and their biocompatibility. Moreover, we will show that the design of scaffolds with appropriate biochemical and mechanical stimulating factors, resembling the three-dimensional micro-environment of bone tissue, results in an enhanced proliferative and osteogenic differentiation cell response, thus controlling new tissue formation and reconstruction.
