A large number of technologies have been applied to the fascinating problem of organ regeneration. They include 3D printing and implantation of decellularized matrices. Each of these technologies is currently associated with significant side effects (morbidity) or lack of efficacy. Here, we show that biochemical blocking of wound contraction of severely injured skin and peripheral nerves suffices to induce almost perfect regeneration of these two organs. The process described here has been used in clinics in several countries to regenerate skin or peripheral nerves with minimal morbidity. Successful use of this approach suggests a strategy for organ regeneration based not on replacement of the injured organ but on finding a way to make the organ grow back.
